A FRENCHMAN may have officially unveiled the bikini, but it was the Gold Coast’s grand dame of fashion, Paula Stafford, who made the two-piece cossie a cheeky Aussie icon.

The “queen of the bikini” celebrated her 90th birthday on Thursday with a slap-up party and the launch of her biography, Bikini: The Paula Stafford Story.

REALITY star turned fashion designer Nicole Richie, in Sydney to open a new shopping complex, has praised Australian fashion as “cool” and “chic”.

The Los Angeles-based star of The Simple Life, who has her own fashion label and is a regular cover girl for fashion magazines, says Aussie labels including Sass & Bide, Forever New and Ksubi are all part of her wardrobe.

She says Australian labels are about having fun, feeling comfortable and being relaxed.

“To me it comes off as very beachy and cool and yet very chic at the same time,” says the petite Richie who’s been flown in to officially open the new multimillion-dollar MidCity Centre retail precinct.

Wearing a heavy leather jacket complete with embellished studs, Richie proved she’s lost none of her fashion edge.
